Interview Tips Learned From The Onion

Posted by Andy Dunscombe on Aug 19, 2015 11:06:00 AM

I recently came across an article in The Onion titled "Report: Unemployment High Because People Keep Blowing Their Job Interviews". For people not in the know, The Onion is a satirical website that, well, makes up fake news stories. What makes them funny is that there are some nuggets of truth woven into the fiction. Even with this being a satirical article, reading through it can give job seekers a great insight into what can make, or break, a great interview. Let's take a look at some of the highlights of the article and what interview tips we can pull from it.

Be A Rockstar In Your Next Interview

Posted by Andy Dunscombe on Jun 24, 2015 2:59:00 PM

The internet is full of interview tips lists. Off the top of my head, I'd estimate that up to 4% of the entire World Wide Web is devoted to lists that give job seekers advice on how to ace their next interview. There are "Quick Tips" lists, "Key Tips" lists, and even the confidently named "Ultimate" list. Some lists feature 5 tips, some 10, and others 20.

These lists are important. They help job seekers with the basics of interviewing. What all these lists are lacking, however, is a catchy hook, a fog machine, waffles and rap. Luckily for us, Liberty Mutual produced an incredible video that incorporates all of those (yes, including the waffles) together with some very important advice for job seekers.

Video interviews are becoming an increasingly popular way to interview candidates. They are convenient for busy executives and job seekers who may live out of state, and have a more personal feel than phone interviews. We recently discussed the do's and don'ts of making a good first impression in this space. Another important aspect of making a good first impression is the handshake. Although a great handshake is probably not going to be the deciding factor in being hired, a bad handshake can definitely leave a lasting impression on an interviewer.

A panel interview is when a job candidate is interviewed by a panel of company members that includes the manager and anyone else deemed necessary for the interview process. The basic objectives of a panel interview are the same as those for a one-on-one — to learn whether the candidate has the skills and experience necessary to hold the job in question and whether his or her personality and style are compatible with the company culture. To help decide whether a panel interview is right for your next candidate search, we have put together the pros and cons of the panel interview.
