Setting Attainable 2015 Goals

setting_goalsGoal setting and creating individual performance plans can go a long way in creating a performance-focused organization. Regardless of what business you are in, the team you surround yourself with is the most important asset that you have. But how do you get your work group to perform at a high level from year to year? And how do you make the process doable?

Each One of Us

Every employee should have goals and performance objectives… including you. Make sure your employees understand where and how they can have the biggest impact in their job.

When creating individual employee goals, tie them to the company’s overall strategy and be sure to challenge your team to achieve more than they think they can. Big audacious goals? That’s okay, as long as they are specific – the more specific the goals, the easier they are to measure and accomplish. 

Can They Do It?

When creating performance objectives, be sure to emphasize that they are realistic; and don’t take on too many performance objectives or you risk spreading yourself too thin. Without attainable objectives, employees can get discouraged and your well-intentioned goals could end up being a disincentive. Goals should be SMART:

Specific: Distinct goals let your employees know your precise expectations – when, and how much. This also creates an easier process for you to measure progress on the way towards completing their goals.

Measurable: Targets help employees and you track progress, especially if you include daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly milestones. Targets also help you motivate staff.

Attainable: Goals need to be achievable by an average employee. Don’t under, or over, estimate what your team can do.

Relevant: What is the greatest impact your team can make when it comes to the company’s overall strategy?

Time-bound: Goals should have a deadline – just enough time, but not too much time so that it weakens performance. And, be sure to not let day-to-day crises get in the way of meeting your deadlines.
